Chimney sweep logs do not sweep chimneys. They loosen some creosote - which then falls where a brush and vacuum still have to collect it.
Olympia Chimney Chimney Cap Installation: The San Diego Owner’s Guide
If your Olympia Chimney cap is rusted through, blown off in a Santa Ana wind, or letting rain into your flue, we stock Olympia Chimney-compatible caps and install them throughout San Diego, most jobs run between $425 and $725 installed, and we can usually get you on the schedule within the week. You’ll typically discover the problem one of three ways: water staining on the ceiling near the fireplace, a cap you can see from the driveway sitting crooked or missing entirely, or a sweep like us finds the damage during a routine cleaning and shows you the photos.
Here’s the thing about chimney caps in San Diego: they fail faster here than people expect. Not because of freezing, like back east, but because we get a few months of real rain every winter followed by months of salt air and direct sun. A cap that’s been up there eight or ten years is often on its last legs, and if it fails, you’re looking at water in the flue, rust on the damper, and eventually a liner that needs attention. Replacing the cap before that happens is one of the cheapest repairs you’ll ever make on a chimney.
Which Olympia Chimney Models This Applies To
Olympia Chimney makes caps for their stainless steel and galvanized venting systems, and the ones we see most often in San Diego are on prefab fireplaces and gas vent runs, not masonry chimneys. If you have an Olympia Chimney system, the cap is usually a twist-lock or band-clamp fit over the top section of pipe, and the key measurement is the inside diameter of the flue opening. Most residential installs run 6, 8, or 10 inches, and getting that number right is the difference between a cap that seats properly and one that rattles in the wind.
Here’s the compatibility gotcha people run into: Olympia Chimney has changed their cap locking designs over the years, so a cap from a 2005 system won’t always seat on a 2018 pipe, even if the diameter matches. The reliable way to identify what you need is to check the data plate on the fireplace or the pipe section, then measure the flue opening. If you can’t find the plate, take three photos of the cap from the ground and we can usually identify it before we arrive. Olympia caps are solidly built, and unless the original is still available at a better price, we’ll install an OEM Olympia cap. If the manufacturer has discontinued your size, we use aftermarket equivalents from Copperfield that match the sizing and wind rating. We’re an independent San Diego chimney company, not affiliated with Olympia Chimney, so we can put on whatever actually fits your system best.

Signs Your Olympia Chimney Chimney Cap Installation Is Failing
- Water in the firebox after rain. This is the most common first sign. A failed cap or poor cap-to-pipe seal lets rain run straight down the flue. In San Diego, where we can go six months without rain, this often gets discovered in January and the damage has been compounding since the first storm.
- Rust streaks on the chimney chase or pipe. Galvanized caps rust through where the mesh meets the lid first. Once the rust starts streaking down the pipe, the cap is usually within a year or two of failing completely.
- Birds or debris in the fireplace. The mesh screen on a chimney cap keeps animals out. When the mesh tears or the cap shifts, birds, leaves, and the occasional rat from the San Diego hills find their way in. You’ll usually hear them before you see them.
- A visible gap or tilt from the ground. High winds, especially Santa Anas coming through the canyons, will shift a cap that was never properly secured. If you can see it tilting from the driveway, it’s already letting water in when it rains.
- Damper rust or a metallic smell when the fireplace burns. Moisture that gets past a failing cap settles on the damper and firebox. Rust follows, and the smell of wet metal in a burning fireplace is one of those things you’ll notice right away.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included
For an Olympia Chimney-style cap replacement in San Diego, expect to pay between $425 and $725 installed. The spread comes down to three things: the flue diameter (8-inch and 10-inch caps cost more than 6-inch), whether the existing cap is seized or corroded and needs extra work to remove, and whether you need a standard lid or one with a tighter mesh for ember control in wildfire-prone areas.
Every quote includes the cap itself, the labor to remove the old unit and install the new one, a visual check of the flue opening for damage while we’re up there, and cleanup of any debris that came loose. You get a written price before we start, so the number on the invoice matches what we quoted. And the Kingswell Guarantee covers the installation: if the cap fails or comes loose within 365 days, we come back and make it right at no charge. Nathan Corliss and the crew have been doing this in San Diego long enough to know that a cap installed correctly the first time usually outlives the guarantee by years.
DIY or Call Us?
If you’re comfortable on a ladder and you have a basic socket set, you can measure the flue opening, order the right cap, and swap it yourself on a single-story home. That’s the honest answer. The problems start on two-story roofs, steep pitches, or any install where the cap is seized onto the pipe from years of heat and salt air. We’ve taken caps off that required a hammer, penetrating oil, and a fair amount of patience, and doing that twenty feet up on a ladder is a different job than it looks in the video.
Chimney work also means working around the flue opening, and a fall from a roof is a life-changing injury. If you’re not confident on the ladder or the cap won’t budge, call us at (619) 693-1499. We’ll come out, identify what you have, and give you the written price before anything comes off the truck.
FAQs
Most Olympia Chimney caps in San Diego last between 8 and 15 years, depending on exposure to salt air, sun, and whether the cap is galvanized or stainless. Galvanized caps near the coast, in places like Ocean Beach or La Jolla, rust through faster than stainless caps inland. If you’re replacing a galvanized cap that’s already rusting, stepping up to stainless is usually the right call. Call (619) 693-1499 and we’ll tell you what you have and what we’d put back up there.
Sometimes, but not often. A torn mesh screen can be patched, and a loose cap can be re-secured, but once the lid itself is rusted through or the locking mechanism has failed, repair is just throwing money at a part that’s already done. We’ll show you the damage in photos and tell you straight if it’s worth patching or if replacement is the only honest option. Estimates are free, so there’s no cost to find out.
Most Olympia Chimney cap replacements take between 45 minutes and two hours, including setup, removal of the old cap, installation, and cleanup. The wildcard is always whether the old cap fights us on the way off. Seized caps add time, but the price we quote upfront accounts for what we expect, and we don’t change the number mid-job if it turns out to be stubborn.
We keep the most common sizes, 6, 8, and 10 inch, stocked on our trucks for Olympia Chimney-compatible installs, along with caps from Copperfield and other brands we trust, like DuraFlex, HeatShield, and Gelco for related venting and liner work. If you have an unusual size or an older locking design, we’ll source the right part and come back, usually within a few days. Call (619) 693-1499 and we’ll confirm what we have before we head your way.
Say the price first, explain the work, put the promise in writing. That’s how we’ve done it in San Diego since day one, and it’s how we’ll do it on your chimney cap.
