Chimney sweep logs do not sweep chimneys. They loosen some creosote - which then falls where a brush and vacuum still have to collect it.
Gelco Chimney Inspection in San Diego: What to Know First
Gelco chimney inspection in San Diego typically runs $249 to $489 for a Level 2 camera inspection, and most jobs are completed the same day we arrive. If you own a Gelco fireplace, insert, or chimney cap, you already have good equipment – the inspection question is really about whether the flue behind it is still doing its job. We’re an independent Gelco service provider, which means we inspect the whole system honestly and don’t steer you toward work you don’t need.
This page is for San Diego homeowners who want a straight answer about their Gelco chimney, whether that’s a prefab fireplace that’s been acting up or an inspection before a home sale closes. Call (619) 693-1499 and you’ll get a live person, a written price before any work starts, and a real arrival window.
How Gelco Products Fail – and How We Fix Them
Gelco builds solid prefab fireplaces, inserts, and chimney components. But in San Diego we see the same handful of issues repeat themselves, and they’re almost always age- and moisture-related, not manufacturing defects. Here’s what actually shows up on our camera screens:
- Gelco Prefab Fireplace (GC Series): refractory panel cracks. The molded refractory panels inside the firebox expand and contract with heat cycles. After 15-plus years, hairline cracks appear along the seams. The panel itself isn’t dangerous, but the crack lets heat reach the metal firebox wall behind it, and that can warp the metal over time. We inspect panel condition with a flashlight and camera, then decide whether a HeatShield or panel replacement makes sense.
- Gelco Prefab Fireplace (GC Series): rust at the firebox floor seam. San Diego’s marine air is why this happens. The GC series firebox floor meets the side walls at a welded seam, and condensation from coastal humidity settles there during cool nights. We see rust pinholes on units in Point Loma and La Jolla more than anywhere else in the county. The fix is usually panel replacement plus resealing the seam, plus a conversation about whether the chase top is venting moisture properly.
- Gelco Chimney Cap: screen mesh clogging. Gelco caps use a fine stainless mesh intended to keep embers in and critters out. That mesh also traps creosote faster than an open flue would. We see caps in Rancho Bernardo and Poway with mesh so packed that the draft cuts by half. The inspection routine includes pulling the cap, checking mesh condition, and cleaning or replacing it before it becomes a performance problem.
- Gelco Round Top Damper: cracked tension spring. Gelco top-mount dampers rely on a spring-loaded mechanism to hold the damper plate open against the chimney’s draft. After years of opening and closing, that spring fatigues and the plate no longer seats fully. You’ll notice it as a cold draft or a musty smell from the fireplace. We test damper operation during every inspection and replace the spring assembly with an aftermarket part that matches the Gelco spec.
- Gelco Insert (GE Series): deteriorated gasket seal around the door. The gasket on a Gelco insert door is a fiberglass rope that compresses when the door latches. With regular use it flattens and loses its seal, letting air into the firebox at the wrong point and messing with combustion. We test the door seal during inspection by running a thin feeler gauge around the perimeter while the door is latched. If it slips through anywhere, it’s a gasket replacement before the next burn season.
One thing we won’t do on a Gelco job is use parts that don’t match the original spec. Gelco’s prefab fireboxes are UL-listed as a complete assembly, which means swapping in generic panels or the wrong gasket material can void the listing and put the warranty at risk. We use OEM parts where they’re still available, and for older GC units where Gelco no longer stocks parts, we use recognized aftermarket equivalents from the trade supply lines we’ve trusted for over two decades.

Our Gelco Chimney Inspection Process
Here’s what a Gelco inspection with Ashby Chimney San Diego actually looks like, from the phone call to the cleanup:
- 1
Call and quote. You call (619) 693-1499, a live person answers, and you get a written price for the inspection level you need before we ever schedule. No estimator visit, no price-at-the-door surprise.
- 2
Arrival and setup. We show up in the arrival window, in uniform, with a background-checked technician. Drop cloths go down around the fireplace before anything is touched. Your Gelco unit gets a visual once-over first – front and firebox.
- 3
Camera inspection of the flue. The camera goes up the flue, from the firebox to the cap, recording the whole thing. On a Gelco prefab, we’re looking at the inner liner seam, the refractory panels, the damper, and any offset elbows where creosote builds up. If you’re selling a home, this Step is the Level 2 real estate inspection your agent’s lender will want documented.
- 4
Findings with pictures. We sit down with you and walk through what the camera saw. You get photo documentation of anything we recommend, and nothing gets recommended without visual evidence you can see for yourself. If the flue is clean, we tell you that plainly.
- 5
Written price for any work. If we did find something, you get a written repair quote before anything is ordered or scheduled. The number we quote is the number on the invoice.
- 6
The guarantee. Every Gelco repair we complete is covered by the 365-Day Done Right Promise. If the repair fails within the guarantee period, we return and fix it at no charge. That’s in writing, every time.

AfterWhat Gelco Chimney Inspection Costs in San Diego
Most Gelco chimney inspections in San Diego fall into these ranges:
- Level 1 Inspection (visual only): $149 to $199. Right for a Gelco fireplace that’s been swept regularly and hasn’t changed use. We look at the firebox, damper, cap, and accessible flue interior.
- Level 2 Inspection (with camera): $249 to $329. The standard before a home sale, after a chimney fire, or if you’re switching fuel type. This is what a real estate transaction in San Diego County will ask for.
- Level 3 Inspection (with intrusive access): $489 to $900. Only when we suspect hidden damage behind walls or chase around a Gelco prefab. We don’t open walls on a hunch.
What moves the price: roof access difficulty (a steep tile roof in University Heights costs more than a simple shingle access in Carlsbad), the height of the flue, and whether the Gelco cap needs pulling for a clearer camera pass. Call (619) 693-1499 for a free estimate, and we’ll give you a written number before you book.
Why San Diego Homeowners Call Ashby Chimney San Diego for Gelco Work
Nathan Corliss and the crew at Ashby Chimney San Diego have been at this since 2002. When we take on a Gelco inspection, you’re getting technicians who work on Gelco prefabs and inserts week in and week out, not a generalist who’s reading the manual for the first time in your living room.
The Kingswell Way is how we run every job: say the price first, explain the work, put the promise in writing. Every Gelco inspection includes a written price before we start, a written guarantee on every repair, and a live person on the phone 24/7 if something comes up. If your Gelco is beyond repair or a part is discontinued, we work with DuraFlex and HeatShield lines as alternates, so you’re not stuck with a fireplace that has no path forward. And because each Ashby location is independently owned and operated under the Kingswell Guarantee, the person who quotes your Gelco job is the same one who stands behind it.
FAQs
No. A professional inspection in San Diego doesn’t void the Gelco warranty, and skipping inspections is actually what puts coverage at risk – most prefab fireplace warranties require documented annual maintenance. We photograph everything we see, so you walk away with the documentation your Gelco warranty asks for.
Yes, for most models. Gelco still stocks refractory panels, caps, and dampers for many GC-series units, and when an original part is discontinued we source quality aftermarket equivalents from established chimney-trade supply lines. During your inspection we’ll tell you exactly what’s available and what isn’t.
Most Gelco inspections are scheduled within 3 to 5 business days, and the inspection itself takes 45 to 90 minutes on site. We book in a real arrival window, not a four-hour block. Call (619) 693-1499 and we’ll get you on the calendar with a written price before you hang up.
An inspection answers the question of whether your Gelco system is safe and functioning; a sweep removes the creosote and debris from the flue. In San Diego’s burn season, we usually recommend both together, since a camera inspection is far more useful when the flue is clean enough to see the liner surface.
Not necessarily. If you’ve owned the home for years, burn the same fuel, and have the chimney swept annually, a Level 1 visual is often all that’s needed. A Level 2 is the right call if you just bought the home, you’re selling it, you’ve had a chimney fire, or you’re switching from wood to gas. We’ll tell you which one fits, and we don’t upsell to the camera when a visual is enough.
