Chimney sweep logs do not sweep chimneys. They loosen some creosote - which then falls where a brush and vacuum still have to collect it.
DuraFlex Chimney Cap Installation: The San Diego Owner’s Guide
We install DuraFlex-compatible chimney caps throughout San Diego, and most jobs run between $265 and $485 installed, depending on cap size, flue access, and whether the existing mount is still sound. We keep the common sizes on the truck, so we can usually handle the swap the same day we see the chimney. Most homeowners discover the problem the hard way: a rust stain creeping down the brick after heavy rain, or the sound of birds inside the flue in the morning. Sometimes it’s just the cap sitting crooked after a Santa Ana windstorm worked the old hardware loose.
Here’s the part most people don’t realize: a chimney cap does three jobs at once. It keeps rain out of the flue, keeps animals from building nests that block the draft, and it contains sparks so they don’t land on your roof or your neighbor’s dry shake. When any of those fail, the fix is rarely far behind the symptom.
Which DuraFlex Models This Applies To
DuraFlex makes caps sized to their stainless flex liner systems, and the compatibility question comes down to two numbers: the inner diameter of your liner and the outside diameter of the clay tile or metal collar the cap locks onto. On most San Diego homes built between the 1960s and the 1990s, that’s a 6-inch or 8-inch round cap. Round caps are the DuraFlex standard for their flexible relining systems, though we also see 13×13 square base caps on older masonry flues. If you can read the etched label on the side of your existing cap, you’ll see the model stamped there. If not, we measure it in less than a minute when we arrive.
There’s an honest fork in the road here. A genuine DuraFlex cap comes from the same manufacturer as your liner, and the fit is guaranteed to be right. Aftermarket stainless equivalents are less expensive and often work fine, but here’s the gotcha we see on coastal properties: cheaper 430 stainless steel corrodes at the welded seams after a few summers of marine layer humidity. DuraFlex caps use 304 stainless on the shell and mesh, and that’s the difference between a ten-year cap and a three-year cap in neighborhoods like Ocean Beach or Point Loma where salt air eats mild steel for breakfast. We stock DuraFlex and can quote an aftermarket option if you want a lower number. Either way, you’ll see the exact price before we start.
We’re an independent San Diego chimney service, not a DuraFlex dealer, which means we carry what actually holds up out here and tell you plainly when a cheaper cap will do the job.

Signs Your DuraFlex Chimney Cap Installation Is Failing
- Water in the firebox after rain. The most common failure, and the one that should get you on the phone. It usually means the cap’s rain hood has corroded through or the mounting hardware has lifted and created a gap at the tile. Water that sits in a masonry firebox will soak the brick and eventually find the studs.
- Bird or bat activity in the chimney. Animals don’t squeeze past a properly fitted mesh screen. If you hear chirping or scratching in the flue, the side mesh is torn or the cap has pulled loose from the tile. It’s not just noise – a blocked flue from nesting material sends carbon monoxide back into the house.
- Sparks or embers landing on the roof. This is the safety-critical failure. A chimney cap with damaged spark arrestor mesh turns a normal fire into a roof fire risk. If you’ve noticed embers glowing on your roof deck after a fire, stop using the fireplace until the cap is replaced.
- The cap sits tilted or rattles in the wind. Santa Anas flex loose hardware faster than anything else in San Diego. A wobbling cap is an invitation for the next gust to send it into your neighbor’s yard, and the exposed flue is now open to rain and animals.
- Heavy rust staining on the brick below the cap. That rust marks where the cap’s steel shell is degrading and weeping down the masonry. By the time the staining is visible, the cap surfaces are typically on their last season or two.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included
Here’s the straight San Diego price picture. A standard round DuraFlex cap install runs $265 to $385 on a one-story roof with straightforward access. If you’ve got a steep pitch, a tile roof that needs a ridge ladder, or a two-story chimney, that pushes the total to $400 to $485. The range isn’t equipment markups – it’s access time and the hardware that needs replacing when the old mounting bracket has rusted solid.
Every cap job we quote includes the cap assembly, any replacement mounting hardware, removal of the old cap, and sealing the new one against the tile with high-temp silicone rated for flue service. The written price you get before we start is the price on the invoice, full stop. The Kingswell Guarantee covers the installation for 365 days – if the cap fails or works loose inside that year, we come back and fix it at no charge. That’s our rule, not an add-on, and Nathan Corliss won’t let a loophole anywhere near it.
DIY or Call Us?
This is a roof job, and roofs in San Diego are often tile, steep, and two stories off the ground. We say this plainly because we’ve cleaned up enough DIY cap attempts: if your chimney requires a ladder off the eave or you’re standing on clay tile, that’s not a weekend project, that’s a fall risk. The parts themselves are simple to swap once you’re standing at the flue, but getting there safely is the entire job. If you can safely access the chimney and want to inspect the cap yourself, check the mesh for holes, look for gaps where the cap meets the tile, and snap a photo of the model stamp. We’ll quote you from the photo. But when it comes to removing fasteners on a rusted mount at height, call us at (619) 693-1499. Trained, background-checked technicians, written price before the ladder comes off the rack, and nobody has to carry a cap in one hand and hold a ridge tile with the other.
FAQs
A properly installed DuraFlex cap on a San Diego home typically lasts 8 to 12 years, with coastal homes landing at the lower end because salt air accelerates corrosion at the welded seams. We check the cap during every sweep and inspection, so the replacement usually happens before you notice a symptom. For an exact quote on your chimney, call (619) 693-1499 – the estimate is free.
Small tears in the mesh can be patched with stainless wire, but once the shell has rusted through or the mounting collar is compromised, repair delays the inevitable by a season or two. The honest answer we give in the field: patch if the cap is under five years old and the damage is a single mesh tear; replace if the steel is pitting or the mount no longer grips the tile. We’ll show you exactly what we’re seeing before you commit to anything.
Most cap installations take 45 to 90 minutes once the ladder is set. The only delay we run into is when the old mounting hardware fights us, which happens more on coastal homes where the salt has done its work. Either way, you’ll know the complete time and price before we begin.
We stock common 6-inch and 8-inch round DuraFlex caps on the truck, along with mounting brackets and sealant, so most San Diego installs happen the same visit. Oversized or unusual flue dimensions may need a special order, usually with the part in hand within two or three business days. We also carry parts for HeatShield and Gelco systems when the chimney needs more than just a cap.
