Chimney sweep logs do not sweep chimneys. They loosen some creosote - which then falls where a brush and vacuum still have to collect it.
Gelco Damper Repair: The San Diego Owner’s Guide
Gelco damper repair in San Diego typically runs between $240 and $520 installed, depending on which component failed and whether the damper frame itself is still solid. Most repairs we handle are done in a single visit, and we keep the most common Gelco replacement parts on the truck. The usual story is this: you notice a draft when the fireplace isn’t in use, or the handle suddenly spins without resistance. Something in the linkage or the damper plate has given out, and now the chimney is open to the sky 24 hours a day.
If you’re here, you’ve probably already found the Gelco nameplate on your damper and started searching for a fix. Good move. This page covers which Gelco dampers we work on, what fails first, what it costs, and whether you should touch it yourself. We’ll be straight about that last part.
Which Gelco Models This Applies To
We service the full line of Gelco throat dampers, including the cast-iron and steel plate models most commonly found in 1960s through 1990s masonry fireplaces throughout San Diego. The key distinction is between the poker-style linkage (a flat bar and ratchet arm) and the key-style rotary gear assembly. They look similar from the firebox, but the internals are completely different, and the wrong replacement part will bind within a week.
Here’s the compatibility gotcha most owners run into: Gelco changed the gear pitch on their rotary dampers in the mid-1980s. If your home in Clairemont or La Mesa still has the original 1970s damper, the modern aftermarket gear from a hardware store will strip out fast. We match the gear by tooth count and pitch angle on site, not by model year. We also stock the steel plate and linkage arms for both configurations. As an independent San Diego service company, we’re not affiliated with Gelco, but we’ve been repairing and replacing their damper parts since 2002, and our inventory is chosen based on which of their designs actually hold up in coastal air.
A note on OEM versus aftermarket for Gelco specifically: the original cast frame is usually worth keeping if it’s not cracked. It’s thicker than anything sold as a drop-in replacement today. We replace internal components (plate, linkage, gear) with new parts and reuse the frame when it’s solid. That keeps your price down and keeps the original fit.

Signs Your Gelco Damper Is Failing
- The handle spins freely. This is the classic sign of a stripped rotary gear or a linkage arm that has snapped at the cotter pin. The damper plate isn’t moving; you’re just turning a disengaged shaft.
- Cold air pours down the chimney on winter nights. San Diego doesn’t get many freezing nights, but when the marine layer pulls in and the damper won’t fully seat, you’ll feel the draft immediately. A Gelco plate that warps even a quarter inch leaves a gap.
- The damper plate sags or sits crooked. This usually means the hinge ears on the plate have worn oval or one side of the linkage came loose. A crooked plate won’t seal, no matter how hard you crank the handle.
- You hear a grinding or scraping sound when operating it. Creosote and salt air combine into a gritty paste that eats at the pivot points. Ground-down metal on a Gelco damper means the plate is now rubbing against the frame, which accelerates wear.
- Soot streaks appear above the fireplace opening. A damper that won’t fully open doesn’t just fail closed. If the plate is jammed partially shut, smoke rolls back into the room instead of up the flue. That’s a combustion gas issue, not just a draft issue.
If you’re seeing the last one, call us. Carbon monoxide in the living space isn’t a homeowner fix.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included
For San Diego chimney damper repair, most jobs land between $240 and $520 installed. The spread comes down to whether we’re replacing just a linkage arm or cotter pin (the low end), or the damper plate and gear assembly together (the upper end). If the frame is cracked, which we see more often in pre-1970 construction in Mission Hills and North Park, a full damper replacement runs higher, usually $650 to $900 depending on the firebox opening size.
| Repair Type | Typical Installed Price in San Diego |
|---|---|
| Linkage arm / cotter pin / handle gear | $240 – $320 |
| Damper plate replacement (frame reused) | $340 – $520 |
| Full Gelco damper replacement | $650 – $900 |
Every quote is written down before we start, and the price on the invoice matches it. That’s how we’ve always worked. The job includes removal of the failed part, installation, positioning the plate for a proper seal, and a test fire if conditions allow. We also check the damper’s mating surface and correct any obvious gaps. Your repair is covered by the 365-Day Done Right Promise: if the damper fails within a year, we come back and fix it at no charge. That’s in writing.
FAQ
A Gelco damper in San Diego typically lasts 20 to 30 years before the linkage or plate wears out, though homes within two miles of the coast often see faster corrosion from salt air. Regular sweeping helps by removing the acidic creosote that accelerates metal wear.
Most Gelco dampers can be repaired with a new plate, linkage, or gear instead of a full replacement. We replace the whole unit only when the cast frame is cracked or has pulled away from the masonry.
Most Gelco damper repairs are completed in 45 to 90 minutes, assuming the flue is accessible and the firebox is in normal condition. If we have the exact part on the truck, there’s no second visit required.
We stock the common Gelco linkage arms, plates, and gear sets on our truck and have access to the wider range through our parts suppliers. For older or unusual Gelco sizes, we may need to order, but we’ll tell you that before you book.
