Chimney sweep logs do not sweep chimneys. They loosen some creosote - which then falls where a brush and vacuum still have to collect it.
HeatShield Chimney Sweep in San Diego: What to Know First
HeatShield chimney sweep in San Diego typically costs between $189 and $329 for a standard cleaning, and most jobs are completed in 60 to 90 minutes. We’re an independent HeatShield service provider, not a manufacturer-authorized shop, which means we can recommend the right fix without dealership overhead or upselling pressure. If you own a HeatShield-lined chimney or a HeatShield Cease-Fire unit and haven’t had it swept in the last 12 months, this page tells you what to expect, what it costs, and how to avoid a $3,000 liner replacement you may not need. Call (619) 693-1499 for a written quote before any work begins.
How HeatShield Products Fail – and How We Fix Them
HeatShield builds solid products, but every chimney system in San Diego eventually meets the same three enemies: salt air, wildfire-season soot, and neglect. Here’s what we actually find on HeatShield jobs across San Diego County.
- Cease-Fire flue panels cracking at the mortar joints. The Cease-Fire line uses ceramic panels with a joint compound that doesn’t love San Diego’s coastal temperature swings. We see hairline cracks radiating from the panel seams in homes from La Jolla to Point Loma. The fix is usually a HeatShield joint repair, not a full reline, but only a camera inspection tells you which one you need.
- HeatShield clay-tile resurfacing peeling after a chimney fire. If a previous homeowner had a chimney fire and a contractor applied HeatShield’s Cerfractory resurfacing product over damaged clay tile, that surface can spall if the underlying tile shifted. We remove the loose material, assess the tile behind it, and resurface only if the structure is sound. If it isn’t, we’ll show you the camera footage and talk straight about a DuraFlex liner instead.
- Creosote bonding hard to HeatShield’s textured surface. HeatShield’s ceramic finish is slightly rougher than a stainless liner, which means creosote grips it tighter in the first season after installation. That’s not a defect, it’s just a cleaning reality. We use rotary whip heads with nylon flails on HeatShield surfaces, never steel cable, because steel can gouge the ceramic coating.
- Cease-Fire top plates rusting at the anchor points. On exterior chimneys exposed to San Diego’s marine layer, the top plate fasteners corrode faster than the panels themselves. During a sweep we check every anchor, and if the plate is compromised, we replace it before it becomes a water leak into the chase.
- Improper aftermarket patch jobs over HeatShield surfaces. We regularly see chimneys where a handyman smeared furnace cement over a HeatShield crack. That material isn’t rated for flue temperatures and it fails within a year. Our repair uses HeatShield-branded Cerfractory compound, which is what the surface was designed to bond with.

Our HeatShield Chimney Sweep Process
Every HeatShield job follows the same sequence, whether it’s an annual sweep in Rancho Bernardo or a first-time cleaning in a 1960s Mission Hills mid-century. You’ll know the price before we start, and you’ll see what we see.
- 1
The call. You reach a live person at (619) 693-1499. We ask about your fireplace type, last sweep date, and anything you’ve noticed: smells, smoke, animals. Then we book a window and confirm it in writing.
- 2
Arrival and setup. Our technician arrives in uniform, lays drop cloths, and runs the vacuum on negative pressure before any sweeping starts. Your living room floor stays cleaner than it was.
- 3
The sweep. We brush the full flue length using nylon or poly brushes appropriate for HeatShield’s ceramic surface. We’ll also clean the smoke chamber, damper, and firebox. Nathan Corliss, the owner, has us scrape smoke-shelf creosote by hand because rotary heads miss it.
- 4
Camera inspection. Every HeatShield sweep includes a camera run after the cleaning. This is how we find hairline cracks before they become a problem you only discover during a chimney fire.
- 5
Written report and price. If we find damage, we show you the footage on the spot. You get a written recommendation with a dollar figure. If nothing’s wrong, we tell you that too, in writing.
- 6
Cleanup and guarantee. We leave the fireplace area clean, and every repair we make is covered by the Kingswell Guarantee in writing. If a covered repair fails within the guarantee period, we come back at no charge.

AfterWhat HeatShield Chimney Sweep Costs in San Diego
Here’s what you should expect to pay for HeatShield chimney sweep work in San Diego, based on current local pricing.
- Standard HeatShield sweep (Level 1): $189 – $249 for a single fireplace with accessible flue.
- Sweep with camera inspection (Level 2): $289 – $379. We recommend this after any chimney fire, before buying a home, or if you haven’t swept in 3+ years.
- Heavy creosote removal (glazed or 1/4-inch buildup): $329 – $449. We use chemical treatments plus rotary cleaning, often over two visits.
- HeatShield joint repair (minor cracks): $350 – $750 depending on access and number of panel joints.
- Full HeatShield Cerfractory resurfacing: $2,800 – $5,500 depending on flue height and tile condition.
What moves the price: roof pitch and access, flue height, buildup severity, and whether we need to remove an animal nest first. Every quote is written before we touch a tool. Call (619) 693-1499 for a free estimate on your specific chimney.
Why San Diego Homeowners Call Ashby Chimney San Diego for HeatShield Work
We’ve been sweeping chimneys in San Diego since 2002, and we’ve always done it the Kingswell Way: say the price first, show up in the window, leave it cleaner, put the guarantee in writing, come back if it fails. That’s not a slogan. It’s the standard every Ashby location operates by.
On HeatShield jobs specifically, our technicians know the difference between a surface crack you can ignore for a season and a structural fault you can’t. We’re also not married to one brand. If a HeatShield repair doesn’t make sense for your chimney anymore, we’ll tell you, and we stock alternatives like DuraFlex and Gelco so the fix doesn’t wait on a special order. Every technician who walks into your home is background-checked and in uniform. And when you call at 9 p.m. because you smell smoke, a person answers. Not a voicemail. Not a form. A person.
FAQs
No. HeatShield’s warranty documentation requires regular inspection and cleaning by a qualified chimney professional. Keeping sweep records actually protects your warranty claim. We provide a dated sweep report after every visit, and we’re an independent HeatShield service provider, which means we work on the product without any manufacturer restrictions on parts or methods.
Once a year if you burn regularly during the fall and winter months, which in San Diego means November through February for most homes. If you only burn occasionally or use gas logs, every 18 to 24 months is usually sufficient. Homes near the coast with heavy marine-layer moisture sometimes need more frequent cleaning because creosote absorbs humidity and swells, restricting the flue faster than in dry inland areas like El Cajon or Santee.
Often yes. If the crack is in the ceramic surface layer and the underlying structure is sound, we can apply HeatShield’s Cerfractory compound as a targeted joint or panel repair for $350 to $750, not the $3,000-plus a full reline costs. But we’ll never recommend that fix without camera proof that the structure underneath is stable. If it isn’t, you’ll see the footage before we ask you to spend a dollar.
For HeatShield repairs we use HeatShield-branded Cerfractory compound and compatible panels because the chemistry is engineered to bond with the original surface. For anything beyond that, like a stainless steel liner replacement, we stock and install DuraFlex and Gelco systems, which are proper chimney-trade products with their own warranties. We don’t use no-name parts from a supply house shelf, and we’ll tell you exactly what we’re putting in your chimney and why.
Most routine sweeps can be scheduled within three to five business days, depending on your neighborhood and the season. October through December is our busiest stretch from Chula Vista up to Carmel Valley, so if you’re reading this in the fall, the smart move is to book early. Call (619) 693-1499 and we’ll give you a specific date, not a vague “sometime next week.”
If you own a HeatShield chimney and you’re in San Diego, don’t wait until smoke backs up into the living room or you smell creosote on a damp morning. Sweeping is cheap. Repairs are manageable when caught early. The liner replacement you don’t see coming is the expensive one. Call (619) 693-1499 for a free estimate with the price written down before any work starts.
